Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida admitted that they (Sony) were surprised and disappointed by the lack of third-party developer support that came after the PS Vita's launch.
Yoshida believes that third-party developers are missing on opportunities by not supporting the Vita. In an interview with Gamasutra, Yoshida was proud to say that the "PS Vita is the best hardware to bring a very immersive game experience onto portable".
It can be remembered that Sony extensively tried to reach out developers prior to the PS Vita's launch. In fact, many of the things that influenced the PS Vita's design were inputs that came from developers. Even so, they could not get as many developers to invest on the platform.
Yoshida did not deny mobile and social games as reasons for the Vita's lack of third-party support. He said that "There are limited resources that third party publishers have, and they have to diversify into new areas constantly; that's a challenge to get the support that we want".
Yoshida seems confident on the direction that Sony has to take in order to attract third-party developers — by defining what the Vita is, and expanding their install base. He also added that they have to build their own content, and use some functionalities for third-party devs to use.
