The game is about aliens from outer space invading the planet. At the first sight of UFO's, people thought that they'd be friendly creatures interested in a peaceful conversation. However, this turned out to be totally opposite from what they expected and the UFO's launched some hostile creatures mostly in form of giant bugs.
There are loads of weapons to choose from varying in different categories such as assault rifles, shotguns, sniper rifles, rocket launchers, missiles, grenades, special weapons, and tools. You can equip two weapon types at most before you go into battle.
It's an arcade style game, so you basically complete a mission as a pre-requisite to get to the next one. The gameplay is also very linear and mostly involves annihilating all the enemies in the area. You can choose the difficulty that you'd like to play a level. If you ever fail to do so, you can always retry and simply quit to re-plan your attack.
The enemies you kill drop off items such as health recovery, armor and weapons. Weapon drops add more to your inventory and playing a level at a harder level increases the chances of getting new and more powerful ones. Picking up loots can be quite addictive, but you have to be very careful as you'll end up into swarm of enemies and some of your weapons can also damage you if you fire too close to an enemy.
Later in the game, you'll be able to ride vehicles such as tanks, choppers and mechanical robots. Vehicles give you an extra layer of defense and equips you with more fire power. Most vehicles however are hard to control, so depending on your situation, you may better be off without them.
The graphics isn't exactly what I'd call impressive, but it's decent work. The environment is wide and you can destroy almost anything except for the grasses which seems to be the toughest objects in the game (pun intended).
The enemies can range from giant ants, to several stories high robots which have some very sophisticated programming in their movements. Sometimes, you'll also see the big ships from the sky launching the filthy bugs. Enemies that fly could swarm at you and your team, and it's very fun to bring them all down.
The music in EDF 2017 is just fantastic and almost every part of the game is voiced. The music has a long lasting effect in it and it's very easy to remember. It's not broadway quality, but sure adds to the engagement.
The PlayStation Vita touch controls integrated very well in this game. The UI is also nicely laid out. There are areas where the text seems a little too small for my fingers to touch, but it's a good thing that they didn't leave the physical controls off. Yes, you can fully navigate the User Interface (UI) by using the physical buttons.
EDF 2017 supports online and local multiplayer. Once you've chosen your connection mode, you can either choose to play in cooperative multiplayer or versus mode.
In cooperative mode, you go on a mission with other players with your set stage and difficulty. You can talk to other players via in-game chat using pre-made phrases or simply typing on your own words.
You can always go back to missions you've played before. If you find it too difficult to play at a higher difficulty, that's when the online cooperative mode becomes more useful.
The trophies aren't that hard to get. Completionists will mostly only have to do things like command allies in increasing number, kill different types of enemies in increasing number, complete all stages in different difficulty and more. There are over 60 trophies to collect, you'll surely be content.
The Verdict
With over 150 weapons and over 50 missions, Earth Defense Force 2017 Portable presented itself to us to be one of the most worth-while games to play on the PS Vita. It reminds us once again that we don't just buy a game for good graphics, but also for fun and continuously enjoyable gameplay.
